Repeal of Prohibition
Momentum had been building throughout the 1920s to end Prohibition. The stock market crash of 1929 and the Great Depression caused Americans to worry that Prohibition would weaken the economy further. In February, 1933 Congress passed the 21st Amendment, which repealed Prohibition. Many Americans celebrated its ratification on December 5, 1933. Prohibition was officially over.
